Before the Year Ends: Make Room for What Matters to You
Oct 07, 2026
October has a way of reminding us that time is moving. The air cools, we cheer on our favorite teams, pumpkins appear on porches, and somehow the stores are already making room for Christmas.
Soon, our calendars will fill with holiday plans and year-end responsibilities. Before the pace picks up, take a moment to ask yourself:
What deserves more of my attention before this year ends?
You may have spent much of the year working, caring for others, or keeping up with everyday demands. Somewhere along the way, an interest or dream moved to the back burner.
Perhaps you miss having something to look forward to that is just for you. You can be grateful for your life and still want more connection, creativity, adventure, or purpose.
For me, I’m focusing on my health and energy as I work toward finishing a book and an accompanying application to help women in midlife create meaningful, lasting change. These projects matter deeply to me, and I want to bring my best to them.
Of course, life has added a few unexpected challenges. My dog tore her ACL and needed surgery. Then I sprained my own ankle, perhaps a sympathy gesture! Recovery became a shared activity in our house. We’ve both been bouncing back, and I’m feeling even more energized about what lies ahead.
It has reminded me that progress sometimes requires patience and an adjusted pace. Challenges will happen, and some days will be tough. With care, support, and persistence, we can keep moving toward what matters. There is still time to accomplish meaningful goals by December 31.
Give Yourself 20 Minutes
Find a comfortable spot, bring a notebook, and give yourself a few uninterrupted minutes. Think about your life as it is today.
Explore these three questions:
- Which part of my life would I like to give more attention to? Think about moments when you have felt dissatisfied, disengaged, or ready for something different.
- What am I missing? It might be meaningful conversation, time to create, a sense of accomplishment, or room to rest.
- What would I like to understand about my own wants and needs before the year ends? You may be considering a big decision or wondering how to bring more enjoyment into your ordinary days.
Write honestly, without judging what comes up.
Put Your Reflections into Focus
Read through your answers. Are there repeated words, feelings, or wishes? Choose one that stands out and finish this sentence:
“Before the year ends, I want to make room for ______ because ______.”
Be specific. If your answer is “more joy,” consider what would bring that joy into your daily life.
For example:
“I want to make room for painting because I miss the pleasure of creating something with my hands.”
Or:
“I want to make room for deeper friendships because I miss conversations that go beyond catching up.”
My own sentence is:
“Before the year ends, I want to make room for habits that strengthen my health and energy because I want to finish work that can make a difference in women’s lives.”
Naming what you want gives you something concrete to consider as you make plans.
Keep Moving at a Pace That Works
Keep your sentence somewhere you will see it. Choose one manageable way to honor it this month.
If life interrupts your plans, revisit the size or timing of your next step. Recovery, responsibilities, and unexpected demands may require adjustments. Give yourself room to respond while staying connected to why your goal matters.
An afternoon creating, a call to a friend, or steady time devoted to a meaningful project can make these remaining months feel well spent.
When December 31 arrives, what would you be proud you made room for?
Warm wishes,
