What If Joy Is the Most Strategic Choice You Make?

Apr 30, 2026

I recently had the opportunity of traveling to Amsterdam, and what struck me most was how alive the city felt. People were riding bikes, walking side by side, and fully present with each other as the city prepared for King’s Day, with vibrant orange everywhere. The tulip fields were in full bloom, the canals were filled with boats, and the museums carried a sense of living history that reminded me how deeply life can be experienced when we allow ourselves to be in it.

At the same time, we are living in a world where conflict, uncertainty, and human strain are impossible to ignore. The contrast is real. There is beauty and vitality in one place, and in another, hardship and division. Holding both at once can feel heavy.

In the midst of that, choosing joy can feel almost inappropriate. For some, it even brings a sense of guilt, as if choosing light dismisses the weight others are carrying.

But what if it is neither avoidance nor denial?

What if choosing joy is alignment with who you are becoming? What if it is strength in the face of uncertainty and a form of leadership over your own life?

Joy, when chosen intentionally, becomes a stabilizing force. It sharpens clarity, grounds decisions, and protects your energy from being consumed by everything you cannot control. This is not about ignoring reality. It is about deciding how you will meet it.

The shift is not toward surface-level positivity. It is toward something deeper, more grounded, and more meaningful.

Here are three ways to create joy with intention:

  1. Practice Selective Attention

Not everything deserves your energy. There is a difference between being informed and being consumed, and joy begins when you become intentional about what shapes your mindset. Protect your focus so it supports clarity rather than pressure.

Ask yourself:

  • Is this adding perspective or creating pressure?
  • Is this helping me act or keeping me stuck?

Sometimes choosing joy looks like turning down the noise so you can hear your own truth again.

  1. Create Micro-Moments of Mastery

Joy is often found in progress, not perfection. Instead of waiting for big breakthroughs, look for small, intentional wins throughout your day:

  • Completing something you have been avoiding
  • Making a clear, aligned decision
  • Following through on a commitment to yourself

These moments build quiet confidence, and confidence creates momentum. There is meaning in proving to yourself, daily, that you can trust your own direction.

  1. Offer Something Without Needing a Return

There is a form of joy that comes from contribution. When you give your time, attention, or creativity without expectation, you reconnect to your sense of impact and create meaning that is not dependent on external outcomes.

  • Show up fully for someone who needs to be seen or heard
  • Share your perspective or experience in a way that adds value
  • Create something that brings light, insight, or connection

In a world that often feels divided, this kind of contribution matters. It shifts your focus from what is lacking to what you can influence and reinforces that your presence carries weight.

Choosing joy is not about pretending everything is fine. It is about deciding that even when things feel uncertain, heavy, or incomplete, you will still live with intention.

You will notice what matters.
You will align your actions with your values.
You will create moments that feel like yours.

That is not soft. That is a strategy for living fully in a complex world.

If this resonates with you, consider this:

Where in your life are you waiting for joy instead of choosing it?

That is where your shift begins.
