Give Yourself Permission

Jun 16, 2026

Sometimes the most transformational journeys don’t change where you are. They change how you return.

At the beginning of June, I had the privilege of spending four days in the wilderness along the California-Nevada border on an adventure with Riding Wild. What I expected to be an incredible horseback riding adventure became something much more meaningful. Surrounded by wild mustangs, breathtaking landscapes, and an extraordinary group of women, I experienced a level of peace, clarity, and healing that I didn’t realize I needed.

The days were filled with horseback rides, meaningful conversations, yoga, guided healing experiences, and moments of reflection. Far removed from the distractions of everyday life, there was space to slow down, listen, and reconnect with what truly matters.

What surprised me most was the realization that somewhere along the way, I had forgotten that I was allowed to give myself permission.

Permission to slow down.

Permission to stop measuring my life by productivity.

Permission to trust my own timing.

Permission to simply be.

When I returned home, my computer, calendar, and responsibilities were all waiting for me. But something had changed. I wasn’t returning to my life with the same urgency that I had left it. I was returning with a renewed commitment to live and work on my own terms, with healthier boundaries and a deeper appreciation for what matters most.

I think many of us spend years waiting for permission. We wait for someone to tell us it’s okay to rest, okay to change directions, okay to prioritize ourselves, or okay to pursue something new. The truth is that permission rarely comes from someone else. At some point, we have to learn to give it to ourselves.

Here are three simple ways to begin:

1. Pause and Breathe

When life feels rushed, stop and take a few slow, intentional breaths. Creating even a small moment of stillness can help quiet the noise and reconnect you with what you truly need.

2. Spend Time in Nature

Nature reminds us that life isn’t meant to be rushed. Take a walk, watch a sunset, sit by the water, or spend time in a place that helps you feel grounded. Some of life’s greatest insights arrive when we step away from our screens and into the natural world.

3. Replace “I Should” with “I Choose”

Notice how often you say, “I should.” Then ask yourself what you actually choose. This simple shift moves you from obligation to intention and helps you make decisions that align with your values rather than external expectations.

Giving yourself permission might mean setting a boundary, taking a day off, pursuing a dream, saying no without guilt, or resting before you’re exhausted. For me, it means slowing down enough to enjoy the life I’ve worked so hard to create and trusting that not everything needs to happen immediately.

The wild mustangs I encountered moved with freedom, presence, and trust. While most of us won’t be roaming the wilderness anytime soon, perhaps we can borrow a little of their wisdom.

Perhaps we can stop waiting.

Perhaps we can trust ourselves.

And perhaps we can finally give ourselves permission.

What permission do you need to give yourself today?
