A Mid-Year Invitation to Pause, Reflect, and Begin Again.
There is something special about the beginning of July.
For many of us, it brings thoughts of family gatherings, fireworks, celebrating our country's birthday... and this year, maybe a little soccer (or football, depending on where you're from), too. This year marks America's 250th anniversary, a remarkable milestone that reminds us of the courage, hope, and vision it took to imagine something new.
July also happens to be my birthday. Thankfully, my number is considerably smaller than 250. But each birthday gives me the same gift: a chance to pause, reflect, and be grateful for another year of life.
The older I get, the less I think about counting years and the more I think about making the years count.
As I thought about both birthdays this year, one word kept coming to mind: freedom.
Not just the freedom we celebrate as a nation, but the freedom we each have to make choices about how we live our own lives.
It's hard to believe we're already halfway through the year.
That can feel discouraging if life hasn't unfolded the way you hoped. Or it can feel exciting if you've been making meaningful progress. Most likely, it's been a little of both.
The question isn't whether the first six months were perfect. The question is, what do you want the next six months to become?
Too often, we wait for January to make changes. We convince ourselves that next year will be different. But the calendar doesn't hold the power to change our lives. We do.
July offers a beautiful opportunity to begin again. The life you want isn't built in January. It's built through the intentional choices you make between July and December.
Before you rush into the second half of the year, take a few quiet moments to ask yourself:
Am I spending my time on what matters most?
What has brought me the greatest joy this year?
What has quietly been draining my energy?
Have I been living intentionally, or simply reacting to whatever comes my way?
Is there a dream, relationship, or part of myself that I've been neglecting?
If December 31 arrived tomorrow, what would I regret not beginning today?
Perhaps the greatest freedom we have isn't found in where we live or what we own.
Perhaps it's the freedom to:
- change our minds.
- set healthier boundaries.
- pursue work that has meaning.
- forgive ourselves and others.
- rest without guilt.
- dream again.
This week, I invite you to write your own Declaration of Independence.
- What are you ready to let go of?
- What belief, habit, fear, or expectation has quietly been keeping you stuck?
- Who do you want to become by the end of this year?
Whether you're celebrating a birthday this month, gathering with loved ones over the holiday, or simply enjoying a quiet summer evening, I hope you'll take a few moments to reflect on the next six months.
- Six months to learn.
- Six months to strengthen relationships.
- Six months to care for yourself.
- Six months to begin something you've been putting off.
- Six months to become the person you were created to be.
The first half of your story has already been written.
Your second half starts today.
Here's to making the next six months count.
